Barn Art

In the early 1900s, Sue’s great grandparents, William and Sarah Duncan, and their family, arrived on the Sequim Prairie. Her great grandparents, Evan and Bessie Evanson, ran a dairy farm of Old Olympic Highway between 1923 and 1942. Sue’s Grandpa, Delbert Evanson, worked at the Sequim Creamery, and on many of the dairy farms in the area. Her grandpa, Harry Markley, purchased the Annie Grant barn in 1948, recycling the wood from the structure into the Markley Barn, a home for his family, and a chicken coop. Harry and son, Tom Markley, (Sue’s Father), built homes in Sequim for over 50 years.

Sue’s “Barn Art” was born in 2001 after a pencil drawing of the McGeorge barn was given to her Mother, Judy Markley. Subsequent drawings of landmark barns were given to friends and the idea of preserving many historical landmarks was born.  Sue studied art at Peninsula College, and Central Washington University, earning a B.A. in English and Art Education.

Sue, along with many of us who call Sequim home, wants to preserve the memory of our local culture and heritage for future generation. She has shown her work at various local venues, and was featured at the Fifth Avenue Gallery in May 2005.

Her drawings, uniquely framed using old barn windows, will be on display at the Museum and Arts Center until the end of March 2006.

A Reception is scheduled for Saturday, Feb 18th from 1-3pm.
